Imogene Grider (far right), with various family members, prepares to blow out her birthday candles.

On May 13, 2016, Wooldridge Place Nursing Center in Corpus Christi, Texas, celebrated the 106th birthday of resident Imogene Grider.

Grider’s family and friends joined her and a room full of fellow residents and associates for a birthday party complete with music, dancing, cake and laughter. The local media even showed up to share the special occasion with the community.

When Grider was asked how she felt about being 106, she said, “Oh, it’s great, as long as I have people like you to take care of me. It’s good to have help that is given along the way. I just take it day by day.”

Grider was born in Ballinger, Texas. She worked in various places until she moved to Dallas, in 1957. She worked for a drilling company and was a member of the Desk and Derrick Club for all women in the petroleum industry, and she didn’t retire until she was 75!

Married to Ralph Grider, she had two daughters, and her job gave her the opportunity to travel, many times with her family. The family now includes five grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, 11 great-great grandchildren, one great-great-great grandchild and even one great-great-great-great grandchild.

Grider has been a resident at Wooldridge Place Nursing Center since December 2014.
