Wooldridge Place resident wins regional Christmas card contest

Mary Gomez, a resident at Wooldridge Place Nursing Center in Corpus Christi, Texas, is excited that her artwork is now being sent around the country on the front of hundreds of Christmas cards.

Each year, parent company Life Care Centers of America invites residents in more than 200 nursing and rehab facilities to submit Christmas card designs, and one piece is chosen for each of the organization’s geographical divisions. A total of eight designs are printed and distributed to facilities and regional offices throughout the company.

Eunice Jupe came to Wooldridge Place Nursing Center in Corpus Christi, Texas, on Aug. 3, 2017, after being hospitalized twice in two weeks for pneumonia.

Jupe was weak and had difficulty walking and taking care of herself due to the pneumonia, her congestive heart failure and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease....

Wooldridge Place Nursing Center helps Torres recover from stroke

After a stroke hit Alberto Torres on his left side, he could not take care of himself, and he came to Wooldridge Place Nursing Center in Corpus Christi, Texas, on July 14, 2015, for rehabilitation.

When Torres arrived, he was unable to walk or even sit up in bed, let alone do daily self-care tasks like taking a shower or brushing his teeth. The stroke had also affected his ability to communicate, and he could not articulate words.

Priscilla Collins, a licensed vocational nurse at Wooldridge Place Nursing Center in Corpus Christi, Texas, took time out of her day to comfort a resident who was passing away.

She sat with the resident and held his hand, singing comforting songs until he had passed.

With numerous health concerns, Gayle Mantello came to Wooldridge Place Nursing Center in Corpus Christi, Texas, on June 16, 2017, after weeks in the hospital.

Mantello had been weak for a long time and hadn’t walked in two years. When she arrived, she required maximum assistance to roll over in bed, transfer from one surface to another, groom herself, bathe, get dressed and even wheel herself in her wheelchair....

Wooldridge Place floor technician receives customer service award

Troy Floyd, floor technician at Wooldridge Place Nursing Center in Corpus Christi, Texas, received Life Care Centers of America’s Gulf States Region Whatever It Takes And Then Some Award on Aug. 26, 2015, for his dedication to customer service.

Executives from Life Care awarded Floyd a $1,000 cash prize during an awards ceremony at the company’s headquarters in Cleveland, Tennessee.

Therapy at Wooldridge helps Corpus Christi man swallow again

Many people may not realize that speech therapy assists more than a person’s ability to talk; it also can help people relearn to swallow.

This was the case for Rudolpho Corral, a Corpus Christi, Texas, resident, who suffered a traumatic brain injury after a fall.

Imogene Grider turns 106 at Wooldridge Place Nursing Center

On May 13, 2016, Wooldridge Place Nursing Center in Corpus Christi, Texas, celebrated the 106th birthday of resident Imogene Grider.

Grider’s family and friends joined her and a room full of fellow residents and associates for a birthday party complete with music, dancing, cake and laughter. The local media even showed up to share the special occasion with the community.

When he arrived at Wooldridge Place Nursing Center in Corpus Christi, Texas, on Dec. 30, 2015, he needed a moderate amount of help with his activities of daily living, especially since many daily tasks use the abdominal muscles. He had to use an assistive device to walk, and he was having trouble with memory and problem solving.

Wooldridge Place Nursing Center helps woman with cellulitis walk again

On Jan. 4, 2016, Lugene Plummer came to Wooldridge Place Nursing Center in Corpus Christi, Texas, for help in overcoming a cellulitis infection in her right leg.

Plummer, who had already had her left leg amputated below the knee, was getting around her house in a wheelchair, but she wanted to walk again.

The team got right to work in helping Plummer reach her goals.

Rehab tools at Wooldridge Place help man recover from hip replacement

It takes skill, the proper tools and a good balance of rest and activity to recover from a total hip replacement, as Calvin Kimura can attest.

Kimura underwent a hip replacement in January 2016 and came to Wooldridge Place Nursing Center in Corpus Christi, Texas, for just such an experience. When he arrived on Jan. 21, he needed a rolling walker in order to walk and had to have someone standing beside him providing physical support.

Wooldridge Place Nursing Center rehab helps spinal patient return home

Calvin Self had surgery for his scoliosis at the end of December 2015, and, unfortunately, after he returned home, he fell.

He needed rehabilitation before he would be ready to live well at home again.

Self came to Wooldridge Place Nursing Center in Corpus Christi, Texas, on Jan. 13, 2016, eager to participate in physical and occupational therapies.

Wooldridge Place Nursing Center helps long-term resident walk again

Susana Gonzalez is a walking example of how rehabilitation can help even long-term care residents enjoy a better quality of life.

Gonzalez came to Wooldridge Place Nursing Center in Corpus Christi, Texas, on Sept. 3, 2015. She was recovering from a gastrointestinal bleed and a Clostridium difficile, or C. diff., infection, and was unable to walk.
